Historic surroundings in Drøbak church
Drøbak Church’s powerful acoustics and detailed decoration form a beautiful backdrop for the classic summer concerts in Drøbak.
The historic wooden church, which is located at the entrance to Badeparken, was inaugurated in 1776, the same year that the American Declaration of Independence was signed. It is also the only church in Norway to have been paid for by private individuals, namely timber merchant and ship owner Niels Carlsen and his wife Martha Zachariasdatter.

The Carlsen family owned large parts of Drøbak and has also given its name to a street in the city. The large round box you see up on the wall to the right is the “Carlsestolen”, Niels Carlsen’s family chair.
It is located in the same place as the royal box in Our Saviour’s Church in Oslo, today’s Oslo Cathedral, which was the formal image for the white timber church in Drøbak.
Summer idyll just outside Oslo
Drøbak is a very accessible summer paradise, just south of Oslo. You can get here by car, bus (500) or Ruter boat (B21 and B22) and after a musical morning at a summer concert, there are many reasons to stay a few hours and explore.
Here you’ll find a calm and pleasant holiday atmosphere, where you don’t have to do a thing to enjoy yourself. Buy an ice cream, have lunch on a sunny outdoor terrace, stroll through narrow streets flanked by small, white wooden houses or let your feet dangle from the quayside. It’s something completely different from Oslo, but at the same time so close to the capital.
Drøbak also has many small charming niche shops, and not a single chain store. As an artist city, Drøbak also has many galleries.
